Change can be as gradual as getting older or as sudden as a power outage. It can be as welcome as a vacation or as devastating as the death of a loved one. One thing is sure though, change is inevitable and try as we might, we can't stop it from happening. When it comes to change, the only thing we can control is our response to it. Have you ever noticed that some people seem to shine in the midst of tragedy and others fall apart when something good happens? The key to both situations is the ability to adapt. Fear of the unknown is why many people resist change instead of trying to adapt to it. Familiarity is comfortable. Ever know someone who hates his job but is too stuck to switch careers? Adaptability is a wonderful trait, and you can develop it by focusing on staying flexible, being prepared, and keeping an open mind. Within all change there are many opportunities for growth. Finally, don't dwell on changes that you can't control. If you concentrate on the things that you can control and accept the things that you can't, you'll be more adaptable and develop a healthier, happier attitude toward life.

I'm Dr. Richard Flanagan.
